The Edge of the Reservoir
A Novel

on the cover:

Ryan Masterson, fast approaching middle-age, is frustrated with life. He loves nature but is condemned to live in the city. He is an artist forced to work at an advertising agency. And he is surrounded on all sides by enigmatic Mormons. When his only friend, Miles, a co-worker, is encouraged to leave their office, Ryan feels stranded, a solitary human being adrift in a sea of optimistic Mormons. The Edge of the Reservoir is a powerful, contemporary first novel—a story of modern life set in Salt Lake City and Idaho Falls.

“Larry Morris is unrelenting in his portrayal of one man’s attempt to reconcile the complexities that arise in relationships between husbands and wives, children and their parents, adults and their beliefs. The Edge of the Reservoir is an extremely well-paced novel. I kept reading because I wanted to know how Ryan would resolve his situation, but more importantly because I knew I was learning something about deep, human emotion.” —Darrell Spencer, author, Woman Packing a Pistol

“Larry Morris has written a compelling novel about a Gentile living -among the Mormons and loving one of them. He makes middle-class Salt Lake City Mormon and non-Mormon life dramatic—obviously not an easy thing to do. This is a new and fascinating view of Utah and Idaho and very good reading.” —Douglas Thayer, author, Summer Fire

“Ryan Masterson is a man in quiet crisis—bewildered by the past, hovering between hope and dread of his future. Although not a Mormon, he is trying to stay afloat in a Mormon stream, feeling its tugs, undercurrents, and ripples from his own pas t. Ryan’s story is very much one of faith, told in a deceptively simple, supple style, that carries the reader on its current.” —Lavina Fielding Anderson, co-editor, Sisters in Spirit

“The characters in Larry Morris’s fine book, The Edge of the Reservoir, have the wonderfully disturbing quality I see only from time to time on the current scene—they seem to be people I know. They live in Salt Lake City with hi stories in southern Idaho—and their struggles with the present and the past make up the decent lives around us. Ryan’s moment of crisis here has been dealt with honestly and realistically, yet with real affection. Morris offers us a special book of ordinary lives.” —Ron Carlson, author, The News of the World
